Traveling Between Singapore And Kuala Lumpur

With the implementation of Circuit Breaker in Singapore and Movement Control Order in Malaysia, traveling by land between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur may not be going back to normal for now.

As we look forward to that to come, let me share to you a suggested way to travel cross-border  by land from this two major cities in Southeast Asia- Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Traveling by land is really exciting. You can enjoy the scenic routes and have a glance at the beauty of nature and can see different towns and cities you will be passing by. For me, I would prefer you to travel by land between Singapore and Malaysia. There are a lot of bus services that can link you between these two destinations.

During my recent research on our trip to Kuala Lumpur (in 2019), there are few service providers that can help you cross the border and go straight to Kuala Lumpur via the Terminal Berespadu Selatan. I managed to find the following which you can also use:

  • Billion Star
  • Grassland
  • KKKL
  • 88
  • Causeway Link
  • Starmart
  • Theone Travel
  • Transtar
  • City Holidays
  • Golden Coach

As a traveler, I compared the pricing of each service provider from various online booking platforms such as easybook, redbus, busonlineticket, etc. I found out that Causeway Link express bus service is one of the reliable transportation services that I can use too- they are quite cheap and with good reviews.

Because we don’t know where the bus is at that time in Singapore, we asked the counter officer of Causeway Link to lead us where the bus is. They directed us through an escalator going down and we exited the building just beside the Burger King on the ground floor (inside IMM Mall).

The bus is located outside of IMM Mall bus bay area just beside Toh Guan Road in Jurong East, Singapore. The distance of the bus bay area from the Causeway Link counter is about a 2 to 3 minutes’ walk.

Our bus fare for this ride was about 43 SGD per way. It is a direct bus service to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore.

The traveling time for this bus was about 5 hours and 30 minutes via the Second Link Causeway through the Tuas Link from Singapore and Second Link in Malaysia. According to the bus driver, sometimes it will take a bit longer (about one hour delay) depend on the road condition.

Here are the points you should remember when traveling to these two destinations

1. Book your ticket online

During peak season like Chinese New Year, Christmas Holidays, Hari Raya Celebration, Deepavali, and other public holidays including long weekends, the bus is expected to be full.

It is hard for us to take a bus that is why we book our tickets online to secure our seats for our specific traveling date and time.

2. About Boarding Pass

Before boarding the bus, we were required to exchange our bus tickets to the boarding pass at the Causeway Link counter in IMM Mall and also to the ticketing counter in Terminal Bersepadu Selatan.

The boarding pass from Terminal Bersapadu Selatan has a QR code which used to scan by the officer in order for us to enter the gate (for that terminal) to get to the bus to Singapore from Kuala Lumpur.

 3. The Bus Service Is Super Cool

The interior design of the bus service is very good. It is a double-decker bus with a super luxurious chair. We love it very much. It has a luggage compartment for us to put in our luggage.

It is good that we have brought our jackets with us. The bus air con is quite cold. We took the seat at the second decker of the bus. The place is convenient for sightseeing, especially along the expressway. It has a lot of palm trees which makes the whole trip exciting.

 4. Toilet Breaks

We had one toilet break. But because I need to go toilet due to some stomach problem, I ask the driver to go for another R&R (Rest and Relaxation Centres)– so he brought us to another R&R for me to do my business.

The driver is very polite and understanding.

5. Traveling Documents

Part of a cross-border journey is an immigration clearance between two government authorities of Malaysia and Singapore. Before the trip, we ensured that our traveling documents are good to go since we are a foreigner to both countries.

We submitted our documents to  SG Arrival Card via an App for exiting and entering Singapore as a replacement of the conventional white card usually presented to Singapore Immigration officer.

We have to take this seriously otherwise, it will affect our entire journey.

6. Luggage Allowance

According to the terms and condition of Causeway Link Express bus service, each passenger is only allowed to bring on board two (2) medium-sized luggage during the journey and the weight of both luggage must not exceed fifteen (15) kilograms.

This is luggage allowance is okay for us. By the way, when clearing the immigration, we were required to carry our own luggage and bring it with us for custom clearance as well.

7. Reaching Terminal Bersepadu Selatan

When we reach terminal Bersepadu Selatan, we drop off at the bus drop off point and we used an escalator going up to get inside the terminal to get to our destination.

Terminal Besepadu Selatan is connected to Bandar Tasek Selatan to get to a rail Transit to get to KL Sentral.

This our journey between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. It was a super smooth bus ride. I hope that by reading this guide, your traveling journey can be smooth too.
