KOTA KINABALU, 2026 : Something is changing in the way people move around the city. At bus stops, terminals, and along key routes, more commuters are making the shift to BAS.MY Kota Kinabalu—not just for convenience, but for the value it brings.

At the centre of this growing momentum are two initiatives that are quietly reshaping daily travel: Kad Konsesi and Kad 30 Hari. While both offer unlimited rides, they serve different groups.

For those without bank cards or bank accounts, a dedicated solution is available. The ManjaLink Card, introduced by Jaguh Bayu Sdn Bhd.

• Card price: RM30.80 (includes RM20 credit)
• Uses Travel Credits (TCr), where RM1 = 1 TCr

How It Works?

If your bus fare is RM2.20, the system will deduct 2.20 TCr from your balance.

Tracking Your Usage:

• View transactions via the LUGO App
• Or through your ManjaLink account online
• Bank card users can check via online banking (e-banking) 

Tap In & Tap Out is Mandatory

Passengers are required to Tap In and Tap Out when boarding and alighting.

This ensures:

• Accurate fare calculation / deduction
• Efficient operations
• A smoother commuting experience

If you missed out to tap out, your will be charge for the entire trip cost which is RM3.90 for S01 or RM2.40 for S05.

Where is the Registration Counter:

Registration for both cards is available at KK Sentral bus terminal. It is specifically located at the ground floor. The operating hour is from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM on a daily basis.

Important Reminder:

• All cards are only activated after 24 hours, meaning usage begins the following day.

BAS.MY Kota Kinabalu SO1 Route

This route will be covering the areas from KK Sentral  straight to UMS  and reach until One Borneo then back to KK Sentral via Jalan Lintas. 

BAS.MY Kota Kinabalu S05 Route

This route operates from KK Sentral, covering Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens and continuing through the Jalan Penampang area before returning to KK Sentral.

About This Project

Backed by the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) Programme under the Ministry of Transport Malaysia and overseen by LPKP Sabah, BAS.MY Kota Kinabalu is more than just a transport system. It is part of a larger vision to build a more connected, inclusive, and sustainable city.

As adoption continues to grow, one thing is clear: whether through the accessibility of Kad Konsesi or the affordability of Kad 30 Hari, public transport in Kota Kinabalu is no longer just an option it is becoming the preferred way forward.

More routes and buses to be running in the next coming months.

With the introduction of two key routes, S01 and S05, and a fleet of 10 buses now in operation, the initiative is set to enhance daily commuting while offering a more accessible way for residents to move around the city.

Important Reminder: Tap In and Tap Out

According to information gathered from BAS.MY Kota Kinabalu bus drivers, passengers are required to tap in when boarding and tap out when alighting using their registered cashless cards or payment methods.

• Bank cards (ATM, Visa, MasterCard)
• Registered concession cards (Kad Konsesi, Kad 30 Hari)
• IC or cards linked to BAS.MY programmes (like ManjaLink)

Failure to tap out may result in passengers (non Kad Konsesi or Kad 30 Hari Holder) being charged the maximum fare for the entire route. For example, a journey that should cost RM2.00 could be charged up to RM5.00 if the passenger does not tap out properly.

It is also important to note that all transactions onboard are strictly cashless. No cash payments are accepted, and all fares must be made via the card reader system on the bus.

Becoming a Permanent Resident (PR) in Malaysia is a significant milestone—one that comes with new privileges and, at times, a few administrative updates that can easily be overlooked. While many focus on updating bank details or employment records, one important aspect that often slips through the cracks is vehicle ownership documentation.

This was exactly the case for me.

After successfully obtaining my PR status and receiving my Red IC, I made sure to update most of my personal records. However, I unintentionally missed updating the ownership details of my car—something that only became apparent when it was time to renew my road tax and insurance.

For years, I’ve relied on the same trusted agent who has been assisting me since I purchased my first car in 2016. Given my work schedule from 8 AM to 6 PM, I’ve always depended on their support to handle renewals. So, when the time came, I proceeded as usual—requested a quotation, made the payment, and expected everything to go smoothly.

But this time, it didn’t.

The solution was clear—I needed to visit the nearest Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia (JPJ) office to update my status.

What to Bring and What to Expect

I headed to my nearest JPJ branch, and thankfully, the process turned out to be much smoother than expected. If you’re in a similar situation, here’s what you’ll need:

• Your original Red IC
• Your passport
• Your vehicle ownership card (commonly known as the “pink card”)
• RM60 per year for license renewal
• RM100 for a physical license card for PR holders and foreigners (compared to RM20 for locals)

Upon arrival, I learned that before updating my vehicle ownership details, I first needed to update my driving license information. Fortunately, this was a straightforward process. I only needed to submit photocopies of my passport and Red IC.

Once my driving license was updated, I proceeded with updating my car ownership details—this time using my Red IC number. Since both services were available within the same building, the transition between processes was seamless. The only thing to note is that you’ll need to obtain separate queue numbers for each transaction.

All payment was done online or cashless. No cash transaction is allowed except for the Photocopy section inside the office. 

Don’t Forget the MySIKAP App

Another helpful tip I discovered during my visit was the importance of registering for the MySIKAP app. For foreigners and PR holders, registration cannot be completed самостоятельно online. Instead, you’ll need to visit a JPJ customer service counter to activate your account.

Once set up, the app makes future transactions—like road tax renewals—much more convenient.

A Worthwhile Two Hours

Despite a busy crowd on the day of my visit, the entire process took only about two hours from start to finish. Efficient, organized, and surprisingly hassle-free, the experience was a reminder that keeping your records updated can save you from unnecessary complications later on.

Transitioning to PR status involves more than just receiving your Red IC—it’s about ensuring that all aspects of your personal and legal documentation reflect this change. Updating your vehicle ownership details may seem minor, but it plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth transactions, especially when it comes to renewals and compliance.

While the crowd can be intense during this peak window, it also adds to the excitement and festive spirit that defines Ramadan in Malaysia.

Of course, with popularity comes a few practical considerations. Parking can be a challenge, especially during peak hours. Visitors are advised to arrive a little earlier or be prepared to spend some time looking for a spot. However, the reward at the end of that search—a wide selection of delicious food and a lively atmosphere—makes the effort worthwhile.

In terms of value, the Smart Pandan Ramadan Bazaar remains a family-friendly option. On average, a budget of RM100 to RM120 is sufficient for a family of four, covering a satisfying spread of main dishes, drinks, desserts, and a few additional sides. This affordability, combined with the variety available, makes it an ideal location for a casual yet fulfilling berbuka outing.

While the bazaar also features a retail section offering Baju Raya and festive items, it is easy to find yourself fully immersed in the food experience alone. In fact, the sheer number of stalls and choices can be both exciting and slightly overwhelming, often leaving little time or energy to explore beyond the culinary offerings. It simply gives you another reason to return for a second visit.
