Picture yourself immersed in a symphony of rhythms, an amalgamation of visual and auditory delights echoing through the splendid halls of this distinguished opera house.

The show promises to be a burst of creative energy, a celebration of cultural diversity in Johor Bahru. Over the next 90 minutes, we will witness the rhythmic intensity of the '24 Festive Drums' and the soulful melodies of 'LaguKu,' skillfully brought to life by the talented Drum Up JB.

This performance is a collaborative masterpiece between two eminent drum troupes – JB Drums from Johor and Orang Orang Drum Theatre from Kuala Lumpur. These companies have played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing Malaysia's drumming culture, contributing significantly to its development and promotion.

Between January and October 2023, JB Drums and Orang Orang Drum Theatre delivered a total of 16 performances, captivating an audience of 6000 people from diverse ethnic backgrounds in Malaysia and international spectators from across the globe.

The first part of the performance unravels against the historical backdrop of the 24 Festive Drums, guiding you through a captivating journey with classic works spanning various eras. Witness the birth of Malaysia's intangible cultural heritage – the 24 Festive Drums – a creation by poet Tan Chai Puan and musician Tan Hooi Song in 1988, earning recognition as Malaysia's intangible cultural heritage in 2009.

In the second part, the stage transforms into a vibrant fusion of percussion instruments representing the diverse ethnic groups of Malaysia. Orang Orang Drum Theatre creatively blends drumming and choral music, showcasing the Chinese ShiGu, Malay gendang, and jidor, indigenous instruments from Sabah, such as the 'kuling tangan' and the gong, as well as the sape from Sarawak. It's a musical journey celebrating the rich tapestry of Malaysia's cultural heritage.

The performance seamlessly weaves in a moment of respite for guests to relax and attend to personal needs. Following this interlude, an engaging interaction between performers and the audience takes center stage. Attendees, including young children, are invited to step into the spotlight and become part of the performance, trying their hand at playing drums, and creating a collective symphony of sound.

This interactive session, facilitated by the performers, fosters a sense of unity and shared creativity among the audience. The boundaries between the stage and the audience blur, turning the performance into a memorable and inclusive event for all.

Indeed, this performance is a cultural treasure, transcending traditional boundaries to present a magnificent display of harmonic performances. It's not merely entertainment; it's evidence of the artistic gems preserved right here in Malaysia. A rich heritage and creative brilliance deserving of celebration and experience by all who appreciate the beauty of cultural expression.
