Malaysia’s First Fully Cashless Bus Service Debuts with BAS.MY in Kota Kinabalu
Kota Kinabalu | September 27, 2025: The Ministry of Transport has officially soft launched the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme in Kota Kinabalu, proudly rebranded as BAS.MY, marking the most significant public transport initiative ever introduced in the city.
The launch heralds a new era of mobility in Kota Kinabalu, aimed at addressing the city’s heavy reliance on private vehicles currently made by car or motorcycle. This overdependence has contributed to traffic congestion, pollution, and reduced productivity along major arteries such as Tun Fuad Stephens Road and the Coastal Road.
Speaking at the soft launch, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said: “This initiative represents more than just new buses. It is about redefining connectivity, creating jobs, and building a sustainable future for Kota Kinabalu. With BAS.MY, we are not only improving transport but also improving the quality of life for the people of Kota Kinabalu.”
The Federal Government has allocated RM17.6 million for Phase One of the SBST programme in Kota Kinabalu. Over the next five years, a total of RM88 million will be invested to strengthen bus services across the city, in line with the national target to achieve 40% public transport usage by 2030.
Under Phase One, the new Jesselton Link will feature 8 routes connected through KK Sentral Bus terminal as the central hub. 48 brand new buses equipped with GPS tracking for real-time monitoring, Electronic ticketing and fully cashless payments – the first project of its kind under BAS.MY in Malaysia, and Air-conditioning and accessibility features for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Buses will operate on 30- to 60-minute intervals, depending on the route, with performance-based incentives in place to ensure reliability and punctuality.
The SBST programme in Kota Kinabalu is expected to deliver multiple benefits such as Employment opportunities for new drivers, technicians, and customer service staff. It also includes support for local industries in bus maintenance, technology, and infrastructure followed by an affordable mobility, including Kad Konsesi concessions for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. Additionally, Environmental gains, such as reduced emissions, lower congestion, and improved air quality is also expected.
The programme was developed through close collaboration with the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP), Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), private bus operators, and community representatives, ensuring the system is designed around the needs of commuters.
BAS.MY Kota Kinabalu services are scheduled to begin operations in February 2026. Future phases will see route expansion, greater frequency, and the adoption of new technologies to further strengthen the system.
Meanwhile, there will be free trial bus service to be expected somewhere in October 2025 operated under Jaguh Bayu Sdn Bhd.
